Local Area and History Croyde Bay has one of the best surfing beaches in England, bordered by the unspoilt rocky headland of Baggy Point. The village is a delightful collection of colour-washed thatched cottages, with a brook running through the centre of it. Ideally situated as a touring centre, the area is full of natural attractions, sandy beaches, lovely countryside and fine views. To the south is Saunton Sands and the championship golf course; to the north lies Putsborough and Woolacombe Sands. Croyde village has a history that stretches back over a thousand years to pre-saxon times. The stream is named after the Viking raider Crydda who settled in the area. The Celtic saint Endelentia who brought Christianity to the village in the 6th century established the oldest building, St Helens Chapel, in Cott Lane. Opposite the Chapel in a tiny lane is the Holywell, which was blessed by the saint and was a popular place of pilgramage for christians. We offer self catering and bed and breakfast accommodation, a few minutes walk from Croyde beach, so if you are intending to visit Croyde or the surrounding area, please give us a call.
